My Experience with ExcelÂ
NFL Social Media Engagement ReportÂ
I wanted to find out whether an NFL teams success on the field translates into success on social media. I used a data set that consisted of all 32 NFL teams, they were ranked by fan base loyalty. The categories of the data included: Win Avg. Engagement, Loss Avg. Engagement, and Loss Engagement % of Win. When looking over this data set, I had some questions that I wanted answered. To answer some data specific questions I used my knowledge of excel to get answers accurately and efficiently.Â
Pivot Table UseÂ
When looking at the data set the first question that came to my mind was, how much does engagement drop from wins and losses for each team? I knew that I needed to use a pivot table for this question as a pivot table would quickly summarize and analyze my data set as it is large. After I created the pivot table I saw the loss engagement % of wins from lowest to highest. I found that the Philadelphia Eagles had the lowest and the New York Jets had the highest.Â
After I found the information I was looking for to answer my first question, I started to think to myself, how does engagement differ between top ranked and lower ranked teams? I again used a pivot table and this time grouped the teams by rank. From the data, I actually got to see how the three different ranked groups differed in win avg. engagement and loss avg. engagement.Â
XLookUp Use
When examining the data set more I wanted to know specific information quickly. To start off I wanted to know specifically what is the loss engagement % of wins for the New England Patriots. I wanted this information quickly so I used the XLookUp function in excel. To start off my look up value was NE Pats, my lookup array was the list of all the team names, and my return array was the loss engagement % of wins column. I got instant results back from that finding that the loss engagement % of wins for the New England Patriots is 70.28%.Â
I again then used the XLookUp function when wanting to know specifically what was the win engagement for the team ranked #29 for fan base loyalty? When using the xlookup function it gave me the specific data I was looking for instantly. When using the xlookup function my lookup value was the #29 ranked team, the Chicago Bears. Then my lookup array was the team rankings, and the return array was the win avg. engagement column. I got results in no time finding that the win avg. engagement for a team ranked #29 is 0.00109.Â
Graph UseÂ
When looking through the data I wanted to see it in a visual way. I used my knowledge of making charts in excel to display the data. I used charts to display data because they transform complex data sets into easy to understand visuals and helps users spot patterns within the data set. I wanted to know the team rankings by loss engagement as % of win and I inserted a bar chart to demonstrate the data. I chose a bar chart because it compares categories. Then I wanted to visually display the data in another way when I wanted to see the win average engagement per team. So I inserted a pie chart to display the data in another form. I chose a pie chart to display the data because it shows portions of a whole.
